What is the Lifesaving Services Division?

Lifesaving services encompasses the core activities of the Jan Juc SLSC.  Namley patrolling, maintainence of gear and equipment and training and
instruction of new and exisiting volunteer lifesavers.  Lifesaving is what we do and it is what we do best!

The division is managed by volunteers on the Lifesaving Services Sub-Committee.  Members can access the sub-committee's phone numbers by following the link to the Members Area.

Patrols

Patrols begin on the last weekend in November and conlcude at Easter.  Between those dates you can find Jan Juc SLSC members volunteering their time to patrol the beach every Saturday afternoon, Sunday and Public Holdiday.

Patrols consist of a number of lifesavers who qualified in:

  • surf skills and surf rescue techniques;
  • advanced resusciation techniques;
  • inshore rescue boat (IRB) driving;
  • first aid; and
  • public relations.

Each patrol is led by a senior member of the club who assumes the role of Patrol Captain.  The patrol captain may be identified by her or his name tag.  Patrols all compete for the prestigious Chris J Allen Trophy awarded to the most efficient patrol.  The competition is tough and is judged by SLSA qualified assessors according to a unique and stringent checklist.  You can find more information on patrols and the patrol competition on the Patrolling Information Page.  Members may view the patrol roster in the Members Area.

Further Awards and Training Courses

As well as volunteering their time to patrol the beach Jan Juc SLSC lifesavers run a variety of in-house training programs according to accredited frameworks.  The most popular course is the Lifesaving Bronze course which runs for a week in December.  This live in course takes ordinary Australians and turns them into extra-ordinary lifesavers.  An enourmous amount of fun is had along the way.

In addition the club either runs or can faciliate SLSA members in gaining a number of other awards.  Check out the Training and Awards Page for more details.
