Membership
The Jan Juc SLSC has membership categories available for active members and non-active members. Any person under the age of 30 and over 13 are required to become an active and qualified surf life saver. Active members, aged 13 and over, perform voluntary beach patrols during the patrol season and also have the opportunity of representing the club at competition. To do this, active members are required to gain their Surf Bronze Medallion or other Surf awards. Non-active members, as well as enjoying the social side, often contribute to the running of the club in other areas such as club management, fundraising, maintenance, etc.
Surf Life Saving Certificate
At age 13, prospective members can gain this award which involves surf swimming, some resucitation skills and general life saving practices. This award is a forerunner to the surf bronze medallion and is often an extension of the nipper/junior program. Members in this category are eligible to compete in carnivals as well as fulfil their obligation to do life saving patrols.
Surf Bronze Medallion
The Surf Bronze Medallion is awarded to those that are proficient in surf life saving rescue, resucitation and communication skills. An intensive live-in camp for new members aged 15 and over, is held for 5 days each year in December at the club house to teach all the skills required. The skills learned consist of:
- surf swimming
- surf rescue techniques with and without specialised rescue equipment such as rescue boats, boards and tubes
- radio communications
- first aid, etc.
The camp involves a lot of physical activity, so prospective participants are required to have a high level of general fitness prior to attendance at the camp.
At the end of the week participants are required to complete a written, practical and physical examination which covers all elements of surf rescue learned during the week. The written examination consists of first aid and surf rescue theory. The practical element consists of applying much of the first aid theory to techniques such as expired air resucitation (EAR) and cardio pulmunary resucitation (CPR). The physical elements require participants to complete a 200 m run, 400m swim & 200m run in under 8 minutes as well as demonstrate rescue techniques using surf rescue boards, tubes and as a crew person in the inflatable rescue boat (IRB). On successfully completing the examination, participants are then eligible to become active members of the Jan Juc SLSC.
This award needs to be requalified each season in order to prove the Bronze Medallion holder is proficient.
