nIPPERS PROGRAMS

There are 3 key programs that complement each other over the Nippers season:

Competition Program

The competition program is all about building confidence, fitness, skills and competition events experience. Sessions are held on the following days:

  • Sunday mornings (U7-13): Focusing on skills development and practicing competition events including swim, board, iron, aquacam, flags, sprint, long run, board rescue and belt and reel.
  • Thursday evenings (U9-13): Focusing on fitness and technique with specialist coaches - grouped on capability rather than age group.
  • Tuesdays & Thursdays (U10-13 during January): Open water swimming sessions are available throughout January to help improve Nippers ocean swimming for competitions.

Carnivals, competing against other clubs and putting our skills to practice, are attended throughout the competition program (note these are not compulsory but are encouraged).

The Sunday and Thursday Competition Program sessions take a break while the Summer Program runs from the 28th of December to the 14th of January. Participants on the Competition Program are encourage to do the Summer Program as it covers different aspects of Surf Life Saving as outlined below, is included in your membership and is required to get your Surf Education Award.

Summer Program

The Summer Program runs from the 28th of December to the 14th of January. The Summer Program consists of 9 sessions covering:

  • Water and beach skills
  • Surf Life Saving theory (including understanding beach conditions, signals, the beach environment and cultural heritage)
  • First aid
  • Introduction to patrols
  • An adventure race
  • Surf Sports training
  • Cosy Corner Carnival
  • Danger 1000 Ocean Swim & Wade
  • Club championships

The Summer Program is fun and inclusive for all capabilities from beginners to advanced. A nipper who achieves all the skills of their age group will attain the Surf Education Award.

Starfish Program

Starfish Nippers is designed for young people aged 6+ with special needs. It runs alongside the Summer Program focusing on beach and water safety and awareness and promotes inclusion and diversity. It features modified Nippers beach and water activities such as games, running, beach flags, wading, swimming and boards as well as activities with the Club’s Age Group Nippers. Further details can be found on the 'Starfish Nippers' page (link provided below).

All of the programs are run entirely by volunteers. We would love your help. To find out more about volunteering opportunities please visit the 'Volunteers' page (link provided below).
