Jan Juc Surf Life Saving Club is an inclusive, welcoming and family-oriented Club that supports and nurtures participation from all community members. From nippers through to life members, our Club’s focus is split equally between building community and safety in the water.

Course Description
The Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) teaches basic first aid, resuscitation and surf rescue skills enabling candidates to become training cadet lifesavers who can take part in beach patrols and Water Safety.

The SRC is a 21.5-hour course plus eLearning (theory).

Candidates are expected to attend Patrol Operation and/or Nipper Water Safety on completion.

Course Outcomes
The programs are designed to equip participants to a proficient standard in methods and techniques of Surf Lifesaving, including:

  • Surf awareness

  • Rescue techniques (boards/rescue tubes)

  • Resuscitation (CPR)

  • First aid

  • Communications

  • Radio operations

  • Standard patrol practices

  • Team work

  • Improve fitness

Course Pre-Requisites

  • Must be a financial Club member prior to course registration

  • 13 years or older before you can undertake an assessment, and the assessment day must be no more than 60 days after completion of the course

  • Able to swim 200m in 5 minutes or less

Assessment

Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios. This will take place on the final day of the course.

Cost
An additional cost is payable upon registration.

Course Dates

  • Sunday 12 October: 8am - 12.30pm at Spring Creek House. Water work at Cosy
  • Sunday 19 October: 8.30am - 12.30pm at Jan Juc
  • Sunday 26 October: 8.30am - 4.30pm at Jan Juc
  • Saturday 8 November: 8.30am - 4.30pm at Jan Juc
  • Sunday 14 November: 5.30pm - 8.30pm at Jan Juc (Assessment - dry)
  • Sunday 16 November: 8.30am - 1pm at Jan Juc (assessment - dry & wet)

Course Life Expiry

Expires 31 December each year

Skills Maintenance
An annual Skills Maintenance must be undertaken by 31st December to keep this award proficient.

How to Apply

Full details will be emailed to those who fill in the Expression of Interest form. To secure a place on this course, ALL of the following are required prior to the course starting.

Registrations will close once the available places are filled.

1. Complete your Membership Application
2. Submit the online registration form which will be emailed to those who have completed the EOI.
3. Pay the full $100 course fees via your Online Payment Gateway SLSA Members Area account.
4. Complete the course enrolment LSV Online Course Enrolment.
5. As Life Saving operations is part of emergency services, it is recommended that you are fully vaccinated

Course Manual

Candidates are required to download the online version of the Public Safety & Aquatic Rescue Training Manual 35th Edition using your SLSA Member login - go to Club Gateway. Navigate to Resource Library/Handbooks and guides/member training/PSAR 35 Manual Complete.  

NB: The video links to skill demonstrations will still work once downloaded to your device, however will require Wi-Fi access . This is available if the course is conducted at the Clubhouse. The theory exam is open book and it is highly recommended that the PSAR is available for each candidate.

Create an SLS Hub account

All attendees will need their own SLS Hub account.

  1. Find the name, date of birth and either the phone number or email address recorded for the attendee:
    • Log in to the parent's Members Area account
    • Navigate to Memberships > Family
    • Click the ‘View/Edit’ link.
    • Click the 'Edit' link beside the attendee's name
  2. Click here to create a new account for the attendee. 
    • Name, date of birth and either the phone number or email address entered must match those on the attendees Membership Record.
